We are quickly seeing the social media landscape changing with new players rapidly gaining followers since Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter/X. With the result of the US election and Musk’s heavy involvement especially through X, it has made consumers and brands alike reconsider their usage on the platform.
One of the big benefactors of this has been Bluesky. It announced it users increased from 9 million people in September to 14.5million in the week to 12th November. This number is still increasing and now over 23 million. You can track the latest user numbers here.
Meta owned Threads has seen a similar increase with 15 million sign ups in the first half of November. This has led Threads to announce that they will be introducing advertising opportunities to the platform in early 2025.
Only time will tell if the users moving to Bluesky and Threads will remain active on these platforms. However, it might be time for marketers and brands to reconsider what are the best social media platforms to reach their audience and if certain platforms still reflect their values.
